Chicken Houses, Coops and Runs

Very few of us are lucky enough to live where we have a ready made yard surrounded by available houses, unless we live in an old farm.

For those who are not equipped for the DIY option it's necessary to buy ready made housing, perhaps a run and other small items which will make your own job easier and provide adequate shelter and safety for the birds.

In response to many queries as to where these items can be purchased and the cost involved etc. we now have a small selection for sale.

Modular Housing

Basic Chicken Coop

We have chosen this particular model for it's flexibility. You can buy only the parts you need and add to it as your birds' needs change. If you are housing young birds it's not necessary to buy the nest box or roosts at this time, they can be purchased at a later stage and simply fitted when the hens begin to lay, both the house and the outdoor pen can be used separately or together and it's style allows for easy cleaning.

Chicken House

The 100 x 105 x 105cm coop has extended legs for better air circulation and a bitumen roof.

The wood is pre-treated with a water-based wood stain.

Caring for your Chicken Coop

Your chicken coop will enhance the look of your garden.  Appropriate maintenance is key to keeping it looking good, protecting it from the elements and prolonging its life. Sun, rain and frost are its enemy.

Ensure it is given at least one coat of water repellent wood preservative each spring and again before winter.  Pay particular attention to the legs which are in contact with the damp ground.

Check its assembly every once in a while as regular moving can loosen screws.

The roosts can be removed for easy cleaning while the galvanised trays in the bottom of the coop can be removed, emptied and hosed down.

The external nest box which is 90 x 39 x 48cm has a top opening to ease egg collection.

Chicken RunChicken Coop and Run

The outdoor pen measuring 220 x 103 x 103cm fits exactly to the front of the coop and can be extended and expanded.

It is zinc plated, with 3 doors.

It is reasonably lightweight and although it is best moved by two people it is possible for one person to shift it.

This outdoor enclosure is ideal in wintertime or in wet weather when the birds are inclined to turn the ground into mud. It is easily moved and it can be used to extend an existing enclosure, providing the birds with extra outdoor space.

This German manufactured chicken housing is modular. Both the chicken coop (with or without the nest box and roosts) and the run can be bought together or separately. They can be purchased assembled or flat-packed for easy transportation.
